Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, addressed Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov with a request to look into the situation with mass layoffs at the enterprises in Zaporizhzhia.
M.Tomenko informed that according to mass media and public reports, workers of Zaporizhzhia plant of ferrous alloys, Zaporizhzhia aluminium smelter, Zaporizhzhia titanium- magnesium plant, and other large industrial mining-and-metallurgical integrated works of the region are going on strike on May 31. The reason of the strike is mass layoffs on the most enterprises due to the economic situation.
The Deputy Chairman stressed that managers of the enterprises, the workers of which are going on strike, confirm the fact of mass layoffs. They claim to be forced to cut down the production, as the enterprises have been transferred from the 1st class of energy consumption to the 2nd class, which increased the expenditures for electrical energy. The managers state that they have addressed the Ministry of Energy and Coal Mining Sectors and the Cabinet of Ministers with a request to change the tariff, but the issue has not been regulated.
M.Tomenko fears lest this situation should bear socially unpredictable consequences not only in Zaporizhzhia, but also in other regions.
